Transistors - Introduction

So today marks the start of my transistor listings and there are quite a few to go, nothing exotic, just a lot of audio, rf and switching transistors to come over the next couple of weeks.

In the unlikely event that you don't know what a transistor is, here's what Wikipedia has to say about them:

A transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify and switch electronic signals and electrical power. It is composed of semiconductor material with at least three terminals for connection to an external circuit. A voltage or current applied to one pair of the transistor's terminals changes the current through another pair of terminals. Because the controlled (output) power can be higher than the controlling (input) power, a transistor can amplify a signal. Today, some transistors are packaged individually, but many more are found embedded in integrated circuits.
The transistor is the fundamental building block of modern electronic devices, and is ubiquitous in modern electronic systems. Following its development in the early 1950s, the transistor revolutionized the field of electronics, and paved the way for smaller and cheaper radios, calculators, and computers, among other things.

Germanium Diodes - Introduction, not just for guitar freaks

In my limited knowledge I thought that Germanium diodes were only of interest to an elite of electronic hackers wanting to rebuild, or recreate the sound of sought after "boutique" 1960s guitar effects pedals.
But on researching the topic further it turns out there are actually quite a few niche uses for this type of semiconductor diode:
They are ideal for building crystal radio radio sets.
They are perfect for high efficiency rectifiers and voltage regulators used in wind or water powered generators.

Here's what Sound on sound had to say about the history of Germanium based electronics:
Active electronics relied exclusively upon the thermionic 'valve' or vacuum 'tube' since its invention by Lee de Forest in 1906. However, by the 1950s the science of semiconductor materials had advanced to the point where it was possible to make bipolar junction transistors — and compact solid-state electronics became a reality. The first devices employed Germanium as the semiconductor and these were widely used for more than 10 years. However, silicon was found to be better in virtually all aspects. It was also ultimately much cheaper, and so silicon transistors gradually replaced germanium through the 1960s, until silicon was ubiquitous in virtually all applications by the mid-1970s.
Germanium devices are now largely relegated to optical applications, because of their inherent sensitivity to the infrared end of the light spectrum. So you'll find them in things like fibre-optic interfaces and night-vision equipment. However, there remains a small market for germanium transistors and some are still being made.
Compared with silicon devices, germanium transistors generally have lower gain, with much less consistency between devices. The gain is also more dependent on collector current and ambient temperature than silicon devices. In practice, that means that a lot of germanium-based electronics had a nasty habit of not working when they got hot! However, germanium transistors were able to operate at higher speeds and slew-rates than early silicon devices — an important consideration in the 1960s but largely irrelevant now.
At a technical level, the base-emitter voltage (Vbe) — the control voltage, if you like — for germanium devices is half that of silicon (300mV instead of 600mV) and that means that you can't just substitute silicon for germanium (or vice versa) without also completely re-engineering the biasing arrangements.
Despite the universality of silicon these days, the 'germanium period' coincided largely with a rapid growth of the music industry, and many people still associate classic sounds with germanium-based products like EMI's first solid-state TG mixers, Neve's 1053 and contemporary modules, and some of the vintage Fairchild and Telefunken products. Similarly, many of the classic guitarist stomp boxes that date from the 1950s and 1960s also employed germanium devices.

Zener Diodes - Introduction, voltage regulation tools

If you have found this page I would be surprised if you didn't know what a Zener Diode is, but just to be on the safe side here is a recap courtesy of Wikipedia:
A Zener diode is a diode which allows current to flow in the forward direction in the same manner as an ideal diode, but will also permit it to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage is above a certain value known as the breakdown voltage, "zener knee voltage", "zener voltage" or "avalanche point".
The device was named after Clarence Zener, who discovered this electrical property. Many diodes described as "zener" diodes rely instead on avalanche breakdown as the mechanism. Both types are used. Common applications include providing a reference voltage for voltage regulators, or to protect other semiconductor devices from momentary voltage pulses.
A conventional solid-state diode will allow significant current if it is reverse-biased above its reverse breakdown voltage. When the reverse bias breakdown voltage is exceeded, a conventional diode is subject to high current due to avalanche breakdown. Unless this current is limited by circuitry, the diode will be permanently damaged due to overheating. A zener diode exhibits almost the same properties, except the device is specially designed so as to have a reduced breakdown voltage, the so-called zener voltage. By contrast with the conventional device, a reverse-biased zener diode will exhibit a controlled breakdown and allow the current to keep the voltage across the zener diode close to the zener breakdown voltage. For example, a diode with a zener breakdown voltage of 3.2 V will exhibit a voltage drop of very nearly 3.2 V across a wide range of reverse currents. The zener diode is therefore ideal for applications such as the generation of a reference voltage (e.g. for an amplifier stage), or as a voltage stabilizer for low-current applications.[1]

Varicaps - Introduction, diodes that act like variable capacitors

Amongst my stock of vintage diodes are some varicaps, Wikipedia tells us the following about them:

In electronics, a varicap diode, varactor diode, variable capacitance diode, variable reactance diode or tuning diode is a type of diode whose capacitance varies as a function of the voltage applied across its terminals.
Varactors are used as voltage-controlled capacitors. They are commonly used in voltage-controlled oscillators, parametric amplifiers, and frequency multipiers. Voltage-controlled oscillators have many applications such as frequency modulation for FM transmitters and phase-locked loops. Phase-locked loops are used for the frequency synthesizers that tune many radios, television sets, and cellular telephones.
Varactors are operated in a reverse-biased state. No current flows, but since the thickness of the depletion zone varies with the applied bias voltage, the capacitance of the diode can be made to vary. Generally, the depletion region thickness is proportional to the square root of the applied voltage; capacitance is inversely proportional to the depletion region thickness. Thus, the capacitance is inversely proportional to the square root of applied voltage.
All diodes exhibit this phenomenon to some degree, but varactor diodes are manufactured specifically to exploit this effect and increase the capacitance (and thus the range of variability), whereas most ordinary diode fabrication strives to minimize the capacitance.

So there you have it, watch this space, the varicaps are coming!
