Sound Equipment - Introduction

So this website has been live for around 6 months now and I am finally going to be listing some cheap sound equipment. I have been carefully inspecting stock and putting aside any items no longer earning their keep.

Just because you'll see items for sale doesn't mean that they are; worn out, poor quality, or unusable. They simply don't fit into the current OneOneTwo.com work flow and cost money to store, look after them as I have and they will deliver good service for many years to come.

Keep your eyes open, as over the coming weeks you will see; speakers, stage monitors, mixing desks, microphones, stands, amplifiers and test equipment listed.

Sound kit coming soon - keep your eyes open

Time Out - Life, death and resurrection of the Fuzz Face

Whilst I was researching the many uses for Germanium Diodes earlier this year, I found a rather good article about the Fuzz Face effects pedal, also known in guitar speak as a "stomp box".
More than a few stomp boxes have earned their historical stripes under the feet of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Gilmour, Eric Johnson, and other legendary guitar slingers. These guys made household words out of pedals with names such as Tone Bender, Octavia, Tube Screamer, Tube Driver, and, of course, Fuzz Face. Introduced by London’s Arbiter Electronics in 1966, the Fuzz Face wasn’t the first fuzz on the market—that distinction goes to the Maestro Fuzz-Tone, a wedge-shaped wonder that created the buzz on the Stones’ hit “Satisfaction” a year earlier. But the Fuzz Face quickly became the distortion pedal of choice (among the few existing at the time) after Jimi Hendrix demonstrated to the world how awesome the pedal sounded with a Marshall and a Strat. Hendrix created a recipe for sonic majesty that enshrined the Fuzz Face as one of the most important guitar effects of all time. Some 45 years later, more players than ever are still digging what it does...

Sold - Laptop / Monitor / Tool Box Flight Case # 2 of 2 - £39

This flight case was used to house a 15" LCD monitor used at events as a "confidence monitor" until last year. The dimensions are; 46cm x 40cm x 17cm, a dinky size that will fit into the smallest of boot spaces. The case is constructed from plywood covered in super hard wearing blue melamine. As the pictures show, it is has been over painted in satin black to match the livery of my other cases. I will most likely return it to the original bright blue finish prior to sale and provide updated images.

Flight case - used to house a 15" LCD monitor

Internally the case is finished with some foam padding, you will probably need to re-foam it to your new kit, I can provide further info on where to source high density foam if you require it. It has a twin Penn branded miniature butterfly catches, a single leather carrying handle and 3-rivet ball corners.

The lid is on lift of hinges on this case and is therefore removable allowing kit to remain in place whilst in use.

This style of flight case is usually quite expensive and could cost from £99 upwards new. I have priced it at £39 for a speedy sale.

Time Out - The forgotten art of repairing things

A few years ago I was involved in providing AV services for a series of local environmental awards and it really changed my mind about recycling. I had always been careful about separating my rubbish out into the appropriate types, but working on these events made me realise that you could go a whole lot further to reduce your impact on the environment. Even better is that adopting a "greener" lifestyle can often save you a whole pile of cash too.

I recently came across this short feature from the BBC website technology section introducing The Restart Project and their idea for a good party; one where things get fixed rather than broken...
In our modern gadget-obsessed society, we are often more likely to wait to get a new product, rather than attempt to repair our current one when it is broken. Restart is an international movement which aims to buck this trend. It educates people on how to do basic repairs to everyday objects, from digital cameras to kettles. At "parties" around the world, experts gather to help people who bring along broken items. They do the repairs themselves, while demonstrating what they are doing, to demystify the process.

Sold - Lemsford style solid aluminium flight case - £49

On offer is a flight case in the true meaning of the word, i.e. cases designed to be as light and strong as possible for air travel The best way to achieve this, is for the case to be solely constructed from corrugated or textured aluminium.
Lemsford Cases are well known for making this type of all aluminium construction, even the edges are welded together, rather than featuring riveted extrusions. I can't say whether this was from Lemsford Cases, but it is certainly very similar and is exactly the style of case much loved by TV broadcasters in particular.

Image of a small solid aluminium flight case from above
Lemsford style case for sale - a style much loved by broadcasters

The dimensions are; 56cm x 51cm x 15cm, a useful size that should fit into the boot of any car. I have no idea what its original purpose was, but I used it as a case for my Spirit Folio mixing desk. It is still padded out with extra foam for this purpose, obviously it could be stripped out to suit your own purposes. It would make a great case for another small mixing desk, guitar effects pedal board or tool kits and test gear.

Lemsford style case for sale - has a lift off lid

The case is constructed from diamond pattern aluminium and as mentioned above, there are no corners fitted or required. It does have 2 Excelsior catches, a comfortable leather handle and a lift off lid.

Lemsford style case for sale - with two Excelsior catches

There are a couple of differently coloured patches on the lid, these are just the residue of areas that had worn a company logo in the past and have been over-painted. There is a dent on the bottom of the case, as shown in the picture. Other than that it is still a very clean, presentable and functional case.

This style of flight case is usually very expensive and could cost from £150 upwards new. I have priced it at £49 for a speedy sale.

Sold - Microphone box flight case - £39

On offer is a flight case that I fitted out to use as a stage box for microphones. The dimensions are; 50cm x 46cm x 26cm, a size which will fit into the boot of even the smallest of vehicles.

Flight case for sale - will fit into the smallest of vehicles

It was originally manufactured by CP Cases, a company with a long history who are still producing both stock and custom flight cases today. This particular flight case is made from vinyl covered lightweight plywood and aluminium extrusions. It was originally a bright blue colour, but I refinished it in Vinylkote satin black in order to match my other cases.
Vinylkote is much more than just a normal plastic paint, it is designed to be used on car interior parts, once applied it cannot be removed from the surface and will not wear off like other finishes. It is testament to the product that it has survived for around 20 years without a blemish.

Flight case for sale - New handle on the front of the case

It has 2 regular sized recessed industrial grade butterfly catches, 2 spring loaded recessed flip handles and 3-rivet ball corners. The handle on the front of the case is one that I fitted, the original was not well placed for balance, resulting in the case knocking into your leg. This new arrangement is much better balanced, there is a slight overlap of the mounting surfaces and I chose not to utilise a couple of the rivet holes. If you wanted to add a couple rivets if would be half an hours work to drill out the metal work and fit them.

Stage box for sales - space for 12 mics and accessories

I constructed a hardboard and foam divider for 12 standard microphones, anything like a Shure SM57/58 will fit a treat, with slimline condenser microphones like the AKG C451/460 there will be a little free play. As can be seen on the picture below the Samson CO5 fits beautifully. There is an accessories pod section for you to store additional clips, desk stands, clamps, cables or whatever else fits. The lid is captive, with a stay and substantial hinges.

Flight case for sale - Something like a Shure SM57/58 will fit a treat

This type of heavy duty road trunk style flight case would cost from £100 new. I have priced this at £39 for a speedy sale, someone will get a bargain.

Feel free to collect, or I can arrange courier delivery within the UK mainland for just £10. Exceptions apply to certain areas though, do let me know your post code first.

Vox Pop - How Dartford powered the British beat boom

Although I have lived in the county of Surrey for nearly the last 20 years, it's just a few miles to the borders of Kent where I grew up. I went to school in Sidcup, not far from the town of Dartford.

Now Dartford is a nice enough place, just not very exotic, it seems so incongruous that at one time it was the home of Vox, who amongst other things produced one of the most successful and long lived guitar amplifier designs of all time, the Vox AC30.  In all of Europe, Marshall are probably the only other company to be quite as well known and enduring.

Vox AC30 - successful and long lived
With this in mid, I present to you a charming documentary detailing how the Vox company evolved alongside the music industry it served and shows how some very ordinary people found themselves thrust into the world of super star celebrities.

It is worth a watch if only to see the look on presenter Iain Lee's face while Brian May plays him the solo to "Bohemian Rhapsody"....

Time Out - Curve tracer project

This is a neat little design by Alexander C. Frank, aka Ajarn Changpuak of a "curve tracer" interface box for your oscilloscope. It will allow you to quickly check the functioning of electronic components visually and it could be certainly be useful if you needed to test out all those vintage components of the type you will find here.

Sold - Heavy duty road trunk flight cases - £89 each

As promised in my last post, it is now time to switch from the microscopic world of components to a series of posts about the very macroscopic world of flight cases.

On offer is a matching pair of road trunk flight cases, which can be purchased individually or together. Their dimensions are; 75cm x 57cm x 57cm, which is a very handy size, I once managed to fit both of them into the boot space of my Citroen Berlingo and still leave space for all five occupants or plenty of other gear.

Flight cases for sale - satin black diamond pattern ply

The cases are constructed from heavy duty ply, covered in a satin black, diamond pattern, finish.

With; 4 large recessed industrial grade butterfly catches, no fewer than 10 spring loaded recessed flip handles, heavy duty 6-rivet ball corners, birch ply wheel boards (black finish) with 4 x 100mm castors and industry standard ‘Guitel’ non-marking blue wheels, they are substantial items.

100mm Guitel  castors - non-marking blue wheels.

There is foam lining remaining from their original purpose, ensuring maximum protection for delicate items whilst in transit, obviously this can be removed for extra space for cables, etc.

A marine ply tray is included which sits on top of the foam lining, it is strong enough to be used as a step.

Marine ply tray - strong enough to be used as a step

There was some surface patination from storage in an unheated area, so I have taken the liberty of running over the worst of it with a burnishing tool where feasible. This has smartened up their appearance and they shouldn't shame you whether you next gig is at the local pub or a 5 star hotel.

Flight cases for sale - smart enough for 5 star hotel

They have no corporate branding logos or sign writing on them, there are a few minor marks on the top from the position of the original tour labels.

Once used to hold a pair of Barco video projectors and their associated accessories, I re-cycled them as road trunks. There is plenty of space for cables in the bottom section, whilst the trays are very useful for patch leads or smaller accessories like effects pedals or D.I. boxes. As the pictures below will show; a Roland JC85 (2 x 10" combo) fits and even my Sessionette 90 (monster 2 x 12" combo) would fit comfortably with thinner foam.

Roland JC85 - fits with space to spare

Sessionette 90 2 x 12" combo - would fit comfortably

This type of heavy duty road trunk style flight case would cost from £200 upwards new. I have priced these at £89 each for a speedy sale, the castors alone would cost around £80 and they are virtually in new condition.

I can arrange personal delivery for the following cost:
  • Within the M25 - No charge
  • 50 miles from London (e.g. Brighton) - £20
  • 100 miles from London (e.g. Coventry) - £30
  • 200 miles from London (e.g. Sheffield) - £60
  • 300 miles from London (e.g. Newcastle) - £90

Time Out - Beardyman & the Beardytron 5000

So that's it for the transistors, all stock has now been listed and it's time for a quick break.

Whilst sifting my way through all those tedious datasheets, I kept myself awake by watching the very talented Beardyman on YouTube. His act has really evolved in the last couple of years, he made his name as a wizard of vocal sound effect impersonations and a master beat boxer. But recently he has moved things up a notch and has created a bespoke live audio looping production system, the Beardytron 5000 mkII. Not only can he multitrack his own voice on the fly, he can also mangle it into whole other dimensions.

Beardyman - can multi-track his own voice on the fly

I was very surprised to see that he has even presented at the illustrious TED lectures, with a short talk entitled "The Polyphonic Me" as this video shows:

Back here on the blog, next I will be changing scale from tiny components to great big flight cases for storing and transporting all your precious equipment.
